Nearly a year ago, when I joined Dollar General, I quickly realized that many people across the advertising industry didn’t fully understand the scale of our business or the opportunity in front of us.
Too often, Dollar General was viewed through an outdated lens. People knew us for our store count, but not necessarily for the critical role we play in more than 21,000 communities across America. They didn’t always recognize the growth of services like same-day delivery, the strength of our customer relationships or the ability of DG Media Network to help brands connect with more than 100 million customers.
So, we looked for an opportunity to influence the industry’s opinion elite.
Cannes Lions has become one of the advertising, marketing, media and technology industry’s most influential gatherings – a place where ideas are shared, partnerships are strengthened and the future of commerce takes shape.
For Dollar General, the opportunity wasn’t simply to attend. It was to participate in those conversations in a way that reflected who we are as a company.
Not trying to look like every other retailer.
Not by creating the biggest activation or hosting the flashiest event.
But by showing up authentically, sharing our perspective and demonstrating the unique value Dollar General brings to customers, brands and partners.
With the support of Dollar General’s Chief Marketing Officer, Tony Rogers, and our senior leadership team, that’s exactly what we set out to do.
Showing Up Where It Matters
What made Cannes meaningful wasn’t any single event. It was the opportunity to see Dollar General represented across important conversations shaping the future of retail, media, commerce, AI, customer experience and brand growth.
Throughout the week, Tony and I participated in a range of speaking engagements, media interviews, podcasts and partner events.
We began the week discussing the evolution of commerce media at From Shelf to Screen; Commerce Media Delivered. Later that evening, one of the most memorable moments was our Third Eye Blind concert with QSIC. Our Semi-Cannes Kinda Life broke through the noise – bringing together clients, partners and friends in a uniquely Dollar General kinda way – focused on connection and shared experiences rather than another traditional networking event.
Tuesday highlighted the breadth of our growing ecosystem. I joined conversations with ADWEEK and SMG focused on the future of the shopper experience and participated in a Beet.TV panel alongside The Trade Desk and Kevel discussing how brands can better connect onsite and offsite media. That afternoon I had fun serving as a judge for the Retail Media Celebrity Rumble.
Tony represented Dollar General across multiple stages on Tuesday as well, including discussions with DoorDash on AI-powered commerce and with iProspect, eBay and Pinterest on the future of discovery and retail media.
Wednesday was another standout day for DGMN. Tony joined conversations on how brands can build relevance through creators and community. Later, our Semi-Cannes Kinda Lunch brought together industry leaders for thoughtful conversations about retail media while recording several live The CPG Guys podcast episodes. It created an environment for meaningful dialogue and relationship building – something that has always been central to our approach. I can’t wait for you all to hear these episodes – we had fun recording them and dug deep into each of our topics of In-Store, Digital Evolution and how Creative can power Integrated Marketing.
The week concluded with additional discussions on the future of retail media and enterprise marketing. I joined Deloitte Digital to explore how retail media networks are helping accelerate advertising innovation, while Tony joined the Marketing Beyond podcast to discuss how Dollar General is connecting enterprise marketing with retail media to create a more seamless customer experience.
More Than Retail Media
One theme stood out throughout the week: conversations rarely focused only on advertising.
People wanted to talk about measurement, AI, in-store experiences, loyalty, merchandising, enterprise marketing and, most importantly, partnerships.
Those discussions reinforced something we’ve believed from the beginning: retail media is about much more than advertising inventory. When approached strategically, it can strengthen supplier relationships, enhance the customer experience, modernize capabilities, drive growth and create value across the business.
The conversations held throughout Cannes bolstered our momentum and the opportunity that lies ahead.
The Best Part
Some of the most meaningful moments happened away from the stage.
They came through conversations with partners who continue to thrive alongside Dollar General and were eager to learn more about the work happening across our organization.
Whether engaging with DoorDash, QSIC, Kevel, Dentsu, iProspect, Deloitte Digital, The Trade Desk, ADWEEK, Beet.TV, The CPG Guys, The Drum, Marketing Beyond or the countless partners we met with throughout the week, there was a consistent theme: strong interest in what Dollar General is building and where we’re headed.
That interest reflects the trust and relationships our teams have built, the strength of our partnerships, and the growing role DGMN is playing within the broader retail media landscape.
Looking Ahead
One year ago, much of our focus was on building a strong foundation.
Today, we’re operating with tremendous momentum as we Level Up.
Cannes was not a finish line. It was an important milestone in an ongoing journey.
Dollar General has always been successful by staying true to who we are: serving customers, supporting our communities and finding practical ways to create value for our partners.
As we look ahead, that approach won’t change.
Thank you to Tony Rogers, our leadership team, our incredible DGMN associates, and the many partners who spent time with us throughout the week. We’re excited about what comes next.
Here’s to the year ahead.
